Chapter 15 - The Camera Inside the BriefcaseMalcolm entered the broadcast studio through a private control door before police breached the main entrance.

Evelyn stared at the duplicate key.

“You said Grant had searched the briefcase.”

“He searched the lining,” Malcolm replied. “Thomas hid the compartment inside the handle.”

Grant reached for it.

Malcolm stepped back.

“You have failed every stage.”

“You needed me to get close to Melissa.”

“And you became emotionally careless.”

Melissa moved between Emma and the three adults.

The child gripped her hand despite knowing almost nothing about her.

Adam watched through the boardroom feed.

“Malcolm, release them.”

Malcolm looked toward the camera.

“You finally sound like Thomas.”

“Do not compare me to him.”

“You built surveillance into your home, your company, and your marriage. You only object because someone else learned to use it.”

Adam had no clean reply.

His archive had exposed the conspiracy.

It had also recorded people he loved without their full consent.

Every protective system carried the seed of control.

Police began cutting through the studio door.

Malcolm inserted the duplicate key into the master ledger.

The Northstar files started separating.

Criminal accounts.

Protected identities.

Child successors.

Corporate holdings.

Melissa stared at the screen.

“You can end it.”

“I can own it,” Malcolm answered.

Grant drew a weapon from beneath the insurance folder.

Evelyn pulled Emma behind the production desk.

Melissa lunged toward the console.

A shot struck the screen above her.

No one appeared injured, but the feed dissolved into sparks and static.

Adam ran from the boardroom.

Ramos followed.

Warren shouted that leaving violated the emergency corporate order.

Adam did not look back.

Six floors below, officers breached the studio.

The room was empty.

A hidden freight elevator stood open.

Blood marked the control panel, but investigators could not immediately determine whose it was.

The master ledger remained connected to the console.

The duplicate key was gone.

Melissa’s tracking wafer had stopped moving inside the underground parking structure.

Emma’s chair lay overturned near the freight elevator.

Grant’s weapon was found beneath the desk.

Evelyn’s coat was caught inside the closing mechanism.

No people.

Ramos ordered every vehicle exit sealed.

Adam examined the remaining archive files.

One camera continued transmitting.

It came from inside the handle of the missing briefcase.

Thomas had installed a lens behind the leather stitching years earlier.

The footage showed Malcolm carrying the case through the Mercer home on the afternoon Lily was found.

He had worn a maintenance uniform and entered through the garage before Melissa and Grant arrived.

He opened Adam’s office safe, removed the duplicate key, and placed the briefcase where Grant would find it.

Malcolm was the real thief.

But he had not acted alone.

The camera showed another person entering the office.

Mrs. Alvarez.

Adam stared at the screen.

His neighbor handed Malcolm a sealed envelope.

“You promised Lily would only be frightened,” she said.

Malcolm replied, “Melissa promised the same thing.”

Mrs. Alvarez looked horrified.

“I thought we were exposing Grant.”

“You were exposing everyone.”

She had been recruited by Melissa to watch Lily.

Malcolm had convinced her he was part of the same operation.

Like Karen, Warren, Evan, and Melissa, she believed a controlled danger would reveal something larger.

Every protector had accepted one small risk involving a child.

The risks had combined into the bloodstained driveway.

The briefcase camera continued.

Malcolm opened the envelope Mrs. Alvarez brought.

Inside was a birth certificate.

LILLIAN MERCER—MOTHER: MELISSA MERCER. FATHER: MALCOLM SLOAN.

Adam felt the floor move beneath him.

Lily was not biologically his daughter.

At least, the document claimed she was not.

Ramos examined the certification.

“The seal appears authentic.”

“Northstar manufactures records.”

“Yes.”

The footage showed Melissa entering the office later that afternoon.

She found the open envelope.

She read the certificate.

Then she whispered:

“No. He promised this was destroyed.”

Grant entered behind her.

He did not see the paper before Melissa hid it inside the insurance folder.

Her panic in the kitchen had not begun only because Lily caught the affair.

She had just learned Malcolm possessed a document capable of changing Lily’s identity and successor rights.

The camera angle shifted as Grant carried the briefcase away.

The final recorded image came from inside the black SUV.

Malcolm spoke to Warren by phone.

“Once Adam opens the archive, every false parent will expose themselves.”

Warren asked, “And the real father?”

Malcolm looked directly toward the hidden lens.

“He still believes he died twelve years ago.”

Adam replayed the sentence.

Malcolm Sloan was not claiming to be Lily’s father.

The birth certificate was another manufactured layer.

Someone declared dead twelve years earlier remained connected to Lily.

Thomas Mercer had disappeared twelve years ago.

But he stood alive inside protective custody.

Adam opened the master ledger’s child-successor directory.

Lily’s record contained three competing birth certificates.

One named Adam.

One named Malcolm.

The third remained encrypted.

Melissa had the password.

Then the briefcase camera returned to a live feed.

It was moving inside a dark vehicle.

Melissa sat between Emma and Evelyn.

Malcolm drove.

Grant was not visible.

Melissa looked directly toward the hidden lens as though she had finally realized it existed.

“Adam, Lily’s father is not the secret.”

She pulled the master ledger onto her lap.

“The secret is why Northstar created two girls with the same Mercer identity.”

Emma turned toward her.

“What does that mean?”

Melissa opened the encrypted third certificate.

Before the name appeared, another face moved into the vehicle’s front passenger seat.

Detective Evan Price.

Ramos’s supposedly undercover former partner had escaped the shelter and joined Malcolm.

Evan looked back at Melissa.

“You should not have let Adam activate the cameras.”

The live feed cut to black.

At the hospital, Lily’s bracelet began transmitting a second signal.

Not from Lily.

From another child inside the same building.

A ten-year-old girl registered under the name Emma Mercer had been admitted two hours earlier with no guardian and no memory of how she arrived.

Adam stared at the alert.

The Emma taken from Boulder might not be the girl from the ledger.

And somewhere beneath Denver, Melissa was traveling with a child carrying the same face, age, and identity as the one police had just found.
