Chapter 3 - The Chairman’s AlibiWarren Sloan was still inside the boardroom.

At least, the man wearing his suit was.

Adam called corporate security while Ramos enlarged Mrs. Alvarez’s driveway footage. The recording showed the black SUV leaving the Mercer home at 1:46 p.m.

At that exact time, Warren had been speaking during the executive meeting.

Twelve people saw him.

The building cameras showed him entering the boardroom at 7:18 that morning and never leaving.

Yet the man in the driveway had Warren’s height, silver hair, posture, and distinctive black cane.

Ramos examined the footage frame by frame.

“The face isn’t clear enough.”

Adam stared at the cane.

Warren carried it after a ski accident five years earlier. The handle contained a gold wolf’s head commissioned in Aspen.

Only one other person owned an identical cane.

Warren’s younger brother, Malcolm Sloan.

Malcolm had once served as general counsel for Mercer Dynamics. Adam fired him after discovering unauthorized transfers from the company’s employee insurance program.

Warren claimed Malcolm moved to Europe.

No one on the current board had seen him in three years.

Adam returned to headquarters with Ramos.

Warren reacted with practiced outrage when shown the image.

“You believe my brother kidnapped your wife?”

“I believe someone using your family’s vehicle helped Grant remove her.”

“The SUV was sold last year.”

“To whom?”

“A private trust.”

“Controlled by Malcolm?”

Warren refused to answer without counsel.

The merger vote was suspended, but the investors remained inside the boardroom because Ramos wanted every device preserved.

Adam opened the encrypted archive again.

The home cameras had gone dark when Grant reached the cabinet. The system appeared to contain no later footage.

Then the display flickered.

A camera labeled KITCHEN AUXILIARY appeared.

Adam had not installed it.

Melissa had.

The angle came from a smoke detector above the stove.

The recording began three weeks earlier.

Melissa stood alone beneath the camera.

“If Adam finds this, Grant has forced the policy through.”

She looked terrified.

“I started the affair. I will not lie about that. I thought Grant could help me prove the company was stealing from the employee insurance fund.”

Adam felt the room shift around him.

Melissa admitted she approached Grant after discovering payments from Mercer Dynamics to shell companies connected to Malcolm Sloan. She believed Grant was investigating them.

Instead, he was managing them.

When Melissa attempted to withdraw, Grant showed her photographs of Lily walking home from school.

He threatened the child.

“He needs Adam’s briefcase,” Melissa continued. “The originals inside can prove who authorized the transfers. Grant says Warren will approve the merger and bury everything under the acquiring company.”

She touched the hidden camera.

“If the visible system fails, this one uploads only when Adam activates his boardroom archive.”

Melissa had built a delayed message for him.

Then she said something he did not expect.

“The insurance policy is not meant to kill Adam.”

Ramos leaned closer.

“It is meant to declare him dead long enough to move the company shares.”

The policy included a catastrophic disappearance clause. If Adam vanished during a documented violent event, Grant’s trust could temporarily control his voting interest before a body was found.

The plan did not require Adam to die immediately.

It required him to become legally unavailable during the merger.

Melissa looked directly into the camera.

“Grant believes Lily saw where I hid the real archive key.”

The video ended.

Adam turned toward the hospital feed on his phone.

Lily remained protected.

But the child knew something Grant wanted.

He called her room.

“Sweetheart, did Mommy give you anything?”

Lily touched the bandage near her temple.

“She put something inside my bracelet.”

The friendship bracelet on Lily’s wrist contained a small metal bead Adam had never seen.

Ramos opened it carefully.

Inside was a micro-storage key.

Before Adam could connect it, the hospital fire alarm activated.

A woman in a paramedic uniform entered Lily’s floor carrying transfer documents.

The forms ordered the child moved to another facility.

The authorization bore Adam’s signature.
