Chapter 9 - The Second Crime SceneEmergency lights illuminated the boardroom.

Ramos tried the doors.
The electronic locks ignored his police override.
Warren stood abruptly.
“This building’s security system answers to Adam.”
“Not anymore,” Adam said.
Grant had used Melissa’s copied credentials and executive access to seize control.
The sealed windows did not open.
The ventilation indicators showed minimal airflow.
Grant wanted panic, not immediate death. Frightened executives would pressure Adam to approve the merger.
Warren struck the table.
“Give him what he wants.”
Adam looked at him.
“You knew the shelter existed.”
“Every board chairman knows the emergency layout.”
“You entered it forty minutes ago.”
“I have been here all day.”
Adam opened the internal camera archive.
The executive shelter feed was disabled.
A utility sensor still reported movement.
Three adults.
Melissa, Grant, and another person.
Ramos called officers already inside the building. They descended through the maintenance stairwell while engineers worked on the boardroom locks.
Grant returned to the display.
“Nine minutes.”
Adam held up the presentation remote.
“The merger approval requires my fingerprint and voice.”
“Yes.”
“You cannot complete it if I suffocate.”
“You have enough air for an hour.”
Warren looked toward Adam.
“You heard him. Approve it, then reverse it later.”
“The agreement blocks reversal once Northstar receives the shares.”
“People are trapped in this room.”
“So is Melissa.”
Warren’s concern appeared selective.
Adam connected the micro-key to the boardroom console and searched for an isolated release rather than the full dead-man upload.
Melissa had organized the archive into layers.
Financial crimes.
Insurance fraud.
Protected identities.
Private confessions.
She had built separation Grant believed impossible.
Someone had helped her.
A note inside the code read:
Ramos knows how to open Layer Three.
Adam turned toward the detective.
Ramos stared at the message.
“I have never seen this archive.”
“Melissa believed you had a key.”
“My former partner Evan Price handled Northstar before he resigned.”
Evan may have created a law-enforcement recovery protocol under Ramos’s credentials.
Ramos entered his badge number.
Layer Three opened.
It contained videos from Evan Price.
The former detective had been investigating Grant, Evelyn, and the Sloans from inside their private security network. His resignation had been staged.
The red folder Mrs. Alvarez gave him was not stolen.
Melissa intended Evan to receive it.
He was not a false agent.
He was an undercover federal witness whose official identity had been sealed.
Ramos looked stunned.
“My captain told me he was corrupt.”
“Your captain may be part of Northstar,” Adam said.
The final Evan video showed him delivering the red folder to Melissa beneath Mercer headquarters.
She was free at the time.
They planned to expose the merger together.
Then Warren entered the shelter.
Not Malcolm.
Warren himself.
The timestamp was from the previous night.
He told Melissa:
“Grant believes you are still cooperating. Keep him convinced until Adam opens the archive.”
Melissa was working with Warren.
Adam looked toward the chairman.
Warren’s face remained unreadable.
“You sent my wife back into Grant’s plan?”
“I sent her nowhere.”
The footage continued.
Warren handed Melissa a blood packet and the handwritten accusation.
“Lily must look like the victim,” he said. “Adam will open everything once he thinks the child is hurt.”
The blood on Lily’s pajamas had been part of Warren’s operation.
Grant did not design the entire scene.
Warren did.
Grant had then turned the staged emergency into a real kidnapping.
The chairman looked around the sealed boardroom.
“I was trying to catch him.”
“You used my daughter to trigger me.”
“No one was supposed to touch her.”
Adam stepped toward him.
“That sentence is not a defense.”
Below them, officers reached the shelter.
They found Melissa’s chair.
The restraints were empty.
Grant and Melissa had vanished through the emergency tunnel.
A third person remained unconscious on the floor.

Evan Price.
👉 Warren admitted creating the bloodstained scene as a trap for Grant, but Melissa disappeared with her kidnapper before rescuers reached the shelter.
