Chapter 11 - Claire’s mistake
I made a mistake after Emily disappeared.
Before the funeral.
Richard told me Emily had driven off after accusing him of plotting against her.
I believed she might be having a breakdown.
I gave him access to one of her old email accounts because I knew the recovery questions.
I thought I was helping locate her.
Instead, I may have helped him identify what she had shared.
When Ortiz asked whether Richard could access Emily’s cloud storage, I said:
“Maybe.”
Then remembered.
“I gave him the recovery code.”
Ortiz stared at me.
“When?”
“Two days after the car was found.”
“Why?”
“To help.”
I started crying.
She said:
“Claire, stop making this about whether you were smart enough to predict a crime.”
I hated that sentence because it sounded like comfort.
Then she added:
“But tell me every account you gave him access to.”
