Chapter 13 - The key with red thread
The key came from Emily.
Not Margaret.
Not Noah finding it accidentally.
Emily pushed it beneath the basement door during one of the brief times Noah came downstairs.
Red thread was tied to it because the brass key was tiny and easy to lose.
Noah hid it inside a hollow plastic building block.
He kept it for four days.
Why not tell someone sooner?
Because Richard told him Emily had been moved.
Then showed him the news reports about the car.
Then told him:
“Mom is gone now.”
Noah became confused.
Was basement Mom real?
Was dead Mom real?
Children can hold contradictory realities when adults insist hard enough.
At the funeral, seeing the coffin made him decide.
“If Mom was in the basement, Mom couldn’t be in there.”
