Chapter 22 - Emily is found

Seventeen days after the funeral, police found Emily alive.
Not in the Hale basement.
Not in Voss’s hunting cabin.
In a vacant caretaker’s cottage on land owned by one of Voss’s corporate clients, forty-six miles away.
The discovery came from boring evidence.
Fuel receipts.
Cell-tower records.
A maintenance invoice.
A patrol officer noticing a generator running at a supposedly vacant property.
No dramatic rescue clue hidden in a riddle.
Emily was dehydrated.
Weak.
Bruised.
But conscious.
No graphic injuries.
No evidence of severe permanent physical harm.
When an officer opened the locked interior room, Emily’s first question was:
“Noah?”
The officer said:
“He’s safe.”
Then she cried.

Natalie was not there.
Her location remained unknown.
