Chapter 20 - Noah blames himself

Noah asked me one night:
“If I gave the key sooner, would Mom be home?”
I sat beside him.
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“I don’t know exactly.”
“Then maybe.”
I wanted to lie.
Instead:
“The people who locked your mom are responsible for her being locked. You were eight.”
“I am eight.”
“Yes.”
“I had the key.”
“You also had adults telling you Mom was dead.”
He stared at his hands.
“I knew they were lying.”
“Part of you did.”
“I should’ve told.”
I took a breath.
“You did tell.”
“At funeral.”
“Yes.”
“Late.”
“Noah.”
He looked up.
“You told when you were able to tell.”
That became one of the most important sentences in our house.
Not:
You were brave enough.
Not:
May you like
You saved everyone.
Children should not need heroism to compensate for adult crimes.
