The funeral director became an important witness because Richard had pressured him.
Richard said religious reasons required the sealed remains container not be opened.
There was no such family tradition.
He paid cash for expedited arrangements.
He personally delivered the inner sealed box from a third-party transfer service that did not actually exist.
The paperwork used a real mortuary company’s name but a false authorization number.
That crossed from family deception into document fraud.
The funeral home’s procedures were also reviewed.
They had accepted a sealed transfer with insufficient verification.
The director was horrified.
He later told me:
“I thought I was honoring privacy.”
