Chapter 26 - Emily’s return
Emily did not return to the old house.
Never.
Police released some property months later.
Claire—me—helped pack.
Emily stayed in a rental near my home.
Noah moved in with her after clinicians and family court approved reunification.
Slowly.
At first he slept in my guest room too.
Then with Emily.
Then back and forth because trauma does not respect custody labels.
Richard’s parental rights were handled separately from the criminal case.
Noah had therapeutic support.
Emily never told him:
“Your father is evil.”
She said:
“Your dad made choices that were dangerous and illegal. Adults are handling those choices.”
Noah once asked:
“Did he love me?”
Emily answered:
“I believe he did.”
“Then why?”
She said:
“Love does not make every decision safe.”
