Chapter 13 - DANIEL’S FAILUREDaniel apologized badly the first time.

“I’m sorry I didn’t know.”

“That’s not the problem.”

“What is?”

“You knew pieces.”

He looked at me.

I listed them.

My wallet moved.

The yogurt story.

My files disappearing.

Evelyn claiming I yelled when I hadn’t.

The comments about me being “unstable.”

The time she told him I left her alone without dinner when she had refused what I cooked and ordered delivery.

“You treated every one like an isolated misunderstanding.”

“She had a diagnosis.”

“So do millions of people. You let the diagnosis become an explanation before checking facts.”

He sat down.

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“That she was getting worse.”

That stopped me.

Daniel continued:

“If I admitted she was doing some of it deliberately, then I had to admit my mother was trying to damage my marriage. That felt worse than dementia.”

There.

His motive.

May you like

Not stupidity.

Fear choosing the explanation he could tolerate.
