Evelyn wanted to buy another car.
Her neurologist did not forbid it.
He recommended a formal driving evaluation.
She refused.
I supported the evaluation.
Daniel initially tried to avoid taking sides.
That was enough.
Evelyn decided it had been my idea.
Then came finances.
She paid a fake invoice emailed by a scammer.
$8,400.
Not life-destroying.
Enough to scare Daniel.
He suggested account alerts.
Evelyn became furious.
“You want to monitor my money.”
I said:
“Alerts aren’t control.”
She looked at me.
“This is none of your business.”
Fair.
So I stopped speaking.
Daniel set alerts with her consent later.
Evelyn remembered I had been in the room.
In her story, I became the woman taking away:
Her car.
Her privacy.
Her money.
Then Daniel and I discussed an independent senior apartment.
Not a nursing home.
Not memory care.
A beautiful complex with transportation, meals available, social activities, and private apartments.
