“I was jealous.”
I almost laughed.
“Of my dead mother?”
She flinched.
“Yes.”
Daniel stared.
Evelyn continued:
“You kept her pictures everywhere.”
“Three.”
“You talked about what she would think.”
“She died two years ago.”
“And Daniel listened to you talk about her.”
I could not understand.
Then Judith explained something I had never known.
When Martin died, Evelyn wanted Daniel to move closer.
He didn’t.
When my mother became sick, I spent months helping care for her.
Daniel supported me.
Evelyn experienced that as proof:
Claire’s mother mattered more.
Not rational.
Real.
The shadow box was not random.
It was a symbol Evelyn had been resenting for years.
