Susan’s first letter to us did not call me abusive.
It asked us to preserve recordings and stop recording private conversations in areas where Evelyn might have a reasonable expectation of privacy.
Fair.
Then it said:
Evelyn disputed the characterization that she was “faking dementia.”
Also fair.
She had never been diagnosed with dementia.
Then came the harder part.
Evelyn alleged I had created a hostile caregiving environment.
Examples:
I controlled food in the kitchen.
Restricted visitors.
Pressured Daniel to move her.
Recorded her secretly.
Threatened to put her belongings outside.
Once grabbed her wrist.
That last one was true.
Two months earlier, Evelyn reached for another photograph after an argument.
I caught her wrist.
Held it perhaps two seconds.
“Don’t.”
Then released.
No bruise.
No injury.
But now she had a counterstory.
