Chapter 4 - WHY EVELYN MOVED INEight months earlier, none of us expected this.

Evelyn lived alone in a condominium fifteen minutes away.

She had been widowed for six years.

Daniel’s father, Martin, died after a heart attack.

Evelyn remained independent.

Drove.

Traveled.

Managed her accounts.

Hosted dinners.

Then small things started happening.

The utility payment twice.

Missed appointments.

A scorched pan after she forgot rice on the stove.

The worst was the parking-garage incident.

She backed into a concrete column.

No one hurt.

Car damage moderate.

Evelyn insisted the column “was in her blind spot.”

Daniel convinced her to see a neurologist.

Neuropsychological testing showed mild deficits in short-term memory and processing speed.

But she retained strong reasoning, language, and daily-function skills.

Diagnosis:

Mild cognitive impairment.

Follow-up recommended.

No conclusion that she could not live alone.

Then her condo building underwent major repairs.

Water shutoffs.

Elevator closures.

Construction.

Daniel suggested she stay with us for six weeks.

Claire the idiot said:

“Of course.”

Six weeks became three months.

Then Evelyn said the condo stairs during elevator repairs frightened her.

Then winter came.

Then her doctor suggested reduced driving.

Then she sold the car.

Then somehow our guest room became permanent.

May you like

Not officially.

Emotionally.
