Chapter 18 - THE MAIN TRUTHEvelyn finally explained herself during a mediated session.

Not fully at first.

She said:

“I thought Claire wanted me gone.”

I answered:

“I wanted our guest room back.”

Daniel winced.

True.

Not gentle.

Evelyn looked at me.

“You talked about senior living.”

“Yes.”

“You talked about selling my car.”

“You had already stopped driving.”

“You monitored my accounts.”

“Daniel did—with your permission.”

“You were behind all of it.”

“No.”

She slammed her palm against the table.

“There. That. You always say no like you’re the authority.”

The mediator let silence sit.

Then asked:

“What did you hope would happen when you hid Claire’s belongings?”

Evelyn stared down.

Long pause.

Finally:

“I wanted Daniel to see what living with her was like.”

“But those things were not things Claire had done.”

“No.”

“What did you want Daniel to believe?”

Evelyn whispered:

“That she was unstable.”

Daniel’s face collapsed.

The mediator asked:

“Why?”

Evelyn cried.

“Because if he thought she was the problem, he wouldn’t send me away.”

There it was.

No hidden inheritance.

No mastermind.

Fear.

Possessive fear.

She believed Daniel had room in his life for either:

His wife’s boundaries.

May you like

Or his mother’s security.

She chose to make us competitors.
