Chapter 11 - Olivia starts flinching
For several weeks Olivia flinched when adults moved quickly near her face.
Not every time.
Enough.
At bedtime she began touching her nose and saying:
“Grandma bad hand.”
Two years old.
Language still developing.
We brought her to a child therapist who worked primarily through play and parent coaching.
No dramatic diagnosis.
No lifelong prediction.
The therapist told us:
“Do not make Sarah the center of every conversation.”
We were.
We stopped.
We also stopped asking Olivia:
“Did Grandma scare you?”
Instead we responded when Olivia raised it.
“Grandma hit you. That was wrong.”
