Chapter 19 - Michael confronts Sarah
Michael met Sarah at the mediator’s office.
I attended.
No children.
He brought the security transcript.
Sarah looked at it.
“I remember what happened.”
“Then tell me.”
“She reached for Tyler’s plate.”
“He gave it to her.”
“I said no.”
“Why did your no override his food?”
“Because I was the adult.”
“Why did you call him the family name?”
Sarah became defensive.
“I was angry.”
“You’ve said versions of it his whole life.”
Silence.
Michael continued:
“Rebecca carried our family name until she got married. Did she become less your daughter?”
Sarah’s face changed.
“That’s cruel.”
“No. It’s your logic.”
She cried.
He did not rescue her.
That mattered.
Then he asked:
“If Tyler changes his last name someday, does he become temporary too?”
Sarah whispered:
May you like
“Of course not.”
“Then stop pretending this is about names.”
