Chapter 20 - Sarah’s real apology
The useful apology came eight months after the slap.
Written first.
Then spoken.
Sarah said:
“I hit Olivia because I was angry she ignored me.”
No:
She stole.
Good.
“I knew Tyler had offered her the food before I hit her.”
Important.
“I told myself the slap was discipline because admitting it was anger would mean I had no justification.”
Better.
Then:
“I have treated Tyler as though being a boy makes him a more permanent part of this family. That is something I learned and repeated even though it hurt me when I was young.”
Then she looked at Michael.
“I did it to Rebecca too.”
Michael cried.
Quietly.
Sarah continued:

“I love Olivia. Loving her does not erase how I treated her.”
That was the first apology I believed.
