Chapter 26 - Michael’s call

Three years after the slap, Michael showed me the old phone log.

He had found it while cleaning cloud backups.

His call to me.

The one that began:

“What the hell did you do to my mother—”

He stared at the screen.

“I hate that.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I knew her first.”

“What?”

He looked at me.

“When she called, I believed her version for maybe thirty seconds because she was my mother before you were my wife.”

I sat beside him.

“That’s human.”

“It nearly made me walk in defending her.”

“But you didn’t.”

“Because you said Olivia was bleeding.”

He looked toward the backyard.

Olivia was playing with chalk.

Then:

“I wish believing our daughter didn’t require blood.”

That sentence stayed with me.

It should not.
