Chapter 21 - Olivia does not owe a hug
Our first supervised family meeting happened after Olivia turned three.
Sarah entered slowly.
Olivia stayed beside me.
Sarah knelt several feet away.
“Hi, Olivia.”
Olivia stared.
Sarah asked:
“Can Grandma hug you?”
Olivia said:
“No.”
Sarah’s face tightened for half a second.
Then:
“Okay.”
No guilt.
No:
Grandma missed you.
No:
Come on.
That tiny response did more for me than the written apology.
Five minutes later Olivia handed Sarah a toy plate.
“Eat.”
