Chapter 25 - The next hot dog

Two years after the incident, we had a backyard cookout.
Sarah was there.
Structured contact had become ordinary supervised family time.
Tyler was eight.
Olivia four.
Hot dogs again.
Not planned as therapy.
Food.
Olivia finished hers.
Reached toward Tyler’s plate.
Sarah saw.
So did I.
Tyler moved his plate away.
“Ask.”
Olivia asked:
“Can I have?”
Tyler said:
“No, I’m eating it.”
Olivia pouted.
Sarah said:
“Your brother said no.”
Correct.
Olivia started crying.
Sarah did not raise her voice.
Did not touch her.
Did not call her spoiled.
She said:
“You can be mad. The answer is still no.”
I almost smiled.
That was discipline.
Boundary without humiliation.
Later Tyler changed his mind and gave Olivia the last bite.

Sarah said nothing.
Even better.
