Chapter 8 - The family name

Sarah’s comment about Tyler carrying the family name was not new.
Only more explicit.
At Tyler’s birth:
“The Carter name continues.”
At Olivia’s:
“She’ll be somebody else’s family someday.”
I had laughed awkwardly.
Michael rolled his eyes.
Nobody challenged her.
When Tyler learned to ride a bike:
“A real Carter boy.”
When Olivia learned to climb out of her crib:
“That one is trouble.”
Same independence.
Different interpretation.
Sarah gave Tyler a silver Christmas ornament engraved:
Carter family legacy.
Olivia received a doll.
Nothing wrong with dolls.
Everything wrong with the pattern when repeated for years.
I had told myself:
Old-fashioned.
Annoying.
Harmless.

Then the hot dog happened.
Patterns sometimes remain theoretical until a child bleeds.
