Chapter 18 - The main truth
The main truth was not that Sarah hated Olivia.
She did not.
She loved her in a damaged, hierarchical way.
She brought birthday gifts.
Read picture books.
Kept Olivia’s drawings on her refrigerator.
She also believed Tyler deserved more patience, more inheritance, more symbolic importance, and more freedom because he was the boy who would “carry the name.”
That belief shaped hundreds of small decisions.
The hot dog incident was the first time it became physical.
Tyler offered Olivia food.
Sarah said no.
Olivia accepted it anyway.
Sarah interpreted the moment not as two siblings sharing.
She interpreted it as Olivia taking from the child she had placed higher.
Then when Tyler told her:
“I gave it,”
Sarah did not reconsider.
Because the real offense was no longer theft.
It was Sarah losing authority over the hierarchy she had created.
So she slapped a two-year-old.
Then called it discipline.
That was the truth.
No secret inheritance plot.
No plan to injure Olivia.
