Chapter 10 - The papers

Jake eventually remembered papers.

Not clearly.

A week before the restraint incident, he had been looking for a charger at Harold’s house.

He entered the basement office.

The door was open.

On the desk he saw photographs of people.

Copies of driver’s licenses.

Bank logos.

Forms.

To Jake, boring.

Then he saw his mother’s name.

Christine Pierce Hale.

He recognized it.

There was also my name.

Nathan Hale.

Then:

Jake Hale.

He did not read the documents.

Eight-year-olds are not forensic accountants.

He picked up the brass key because it was sitting on a chair and looked like “pirate treasure.”

He put it into his pocket.

Forgot it.

Later it ended up in his backpack.

Why did Harold panic?

Because the document box connected to that key contained material Harold did not want anyone examining.

Police eventually obtained the box under warrant.

The contents changed the case.

Not instantly.

Gradually.
