Chapter 26 - The hospital photo

We had one photograph from the hospital.
Not Jake injured.
A nurse took it the next morning after he asked.
Me sitting beside him.
Christine on the opposite side.
Jake holding both our hands.
His bruise visible.
For years I hated the picture.
Then when Jake was eleven, he found it.
“Whoa.”
I looked over.
“You okay?”
“I look terrible.”
“You had a rough day.”
He stared.
Then:
“Mom looks worse.”
Christine overheard.
“Thank you.”
He laughed.
Then asked:
“Can I keep it?”
I hesitated.
“Why?”
“It’s mine.”
There.
His story.
Not evidence anymore.
I gave it to him.

He put it in a drawer with baseball cards, a broken watch, and three rocks.
