Chapter 6 - The first photograph
Harold’s study had a small interior security camera.
Not hidden.
Part of his home system.
It captured no audio.
It captured only part of the room.
When police obtained footage through consent first and later preservation procedures, the incident itself was partly visible.
Brian holding Jake’s arms.
Scott controlling his legs.
Harold leaning over him.
Christine standing near the doorway.
Hands over her mouth.
Then stepping backward.
Then leaving the camera frame.
Harold’s attorney argued:
The men were restraining a child who had become physically aggressive.
The footage did show Jake kicking.
But sequence mattered.
He started kicking after adults physically detained him.
The camera showed Harold striking Jake.
One open-handed slap.
Not a brutal beating.
Still an adult striking a restrained eight-year-old while demanding information.
The footage also showed Christine returning with a cold washcloth approximately six minutes later.
She knelt beside Jake.

Harold walked away.
What happened in those six minutes became the emotional center of my marriage.
