Chapter 18 - The main truth
The main truth arrived through three separate tracks.
First:
Jake had accidentally taken the key.
No evidence showed anyone sent him into Harold’s office.
Second:
The document box contained evidence of years of financial activity involving family identities, some authorized and some not.
Third:
Harold believed Jake had seen or removed documents.
He panicked.
Not because an eight-year-old understood fraud.
Because children tell parents strange things.
A copied signature.
A familiar name.
A photograph of a bank form.
Harold imagined the chain.
Jake tells Nathan.
Nathan recognizes irregularities.
Nathan examines.
Everything opens.
So when the key appeared in Jake’s backpack, Harold interpreted coincidence as intrusion.
He demanded to know:
Where’s the rest?
Meaning:
What papers did you take?
Who told you to go into my office?
Meaning:
Did Nathan send you?
Jake had no answers because the theory existed only in Harold’s head.
Harold’s frustration escalated.
Brian and Scott obeyed his commands to restrain Jake.
Christine reverted to fear and failed to protect her son.
Harold struck Jake and continued questioning.
That was the central truth.
Not a planned torture session.
Not three men conspiring for days to attack a child.
