Chapter 19 - The financial case becomes real

Investigators did not charge Harold based on the box alone.

They authenticated.

Banks.

Lenders.

Electronic records.

Signature histories.

IP logs.

Account opening dates.

Emails.

Some accusations collapsed.

Good.

One supposedly forged Christine signature was genuine.

She had forgotten signing it nine years earlier.

Another authorization involving Scott was legitimate.

One account I thought suspicious had been opened by Christine herself before our marriage.

Accuracy cut both ways.

The strongest issues remained:

Two loan applications involving copied or falsely represented authorization.

Use of Jake’s identifying information for an unauthorized financial product.

A guarantee associated with Christine that she did not knowingly execute.

Several altered supporting documents.

The criminal loss calculation ended far below early family speculation.

Approximately $74,000 in clearly provable unauthorized exposure, with actual financial loss lower because some accounts had been repaid.

Harold’s motive was not personal luxury.

He used the structures to shore up Brian’s business, manage Scott’s debt, and manipulate family credit.

Still illegal conduct does not become legal because money stayed near relatives.
