Chapter 1 - THE BELT IN THE KITCHEN

The leather belt struck Ethan’s leg before Brooke reached the pantry doorway.
Her nine-year-old brother crouched beside the kitchen counter, both hands covering his head. Broken glass glittered around his knees. Water spread across the tile, carrying streaks of green paint toward the wooden chair Gary had just slammed against the wall.
Their mother stood in the doorway.
Melissa did not scream.
She did not move.
She watched with her arms folded and an expression closer to relief than horror.
Brooke charged into the kitchen.
“Get away from him, you bastard!”
Gary released Ethan’s shirt and turned toward her. The belt remained doubled inside his fist.
“You stay out of this.”
Ethan leaned against the counter, shaking so violently that his teeth clicked.
“I’m scared! Stop it!”
Brooke moved between them.
Gary pointed the belt toward her face.
“Someone has to teach this useless kid a lesson!”
“For spilling water?”
“For lying. For stealing. For destroying this family.”
Ethan shook his head frantically.
“I didn’t steal anything.”
Gary lunged.
Brooke kicked him before the belt could come down. Her heel struck his stomach and sent him stumbling backward onto the kitchen table. Crayons scattered across the floor.
“If you dare lay another finger on that boy,” she shouted, “I’ll send you to jail!”
Gary gasped, recovered, and grabbed the front of Brooke’s shirt.
Melissa remained motionless.
That frightened Brooke more than Gary’s rage.
Her mother had been waiting for this.
Waiting for Brooke to strike him.
Waiting for something she could use.
Brooke shoved Gary’s wrist away and shielded Ethan with her body. She slowly turned toward Melissa.
“You saw everything.”
Melissa crossed her arms more tightly.
“I saw you attack my husband.”
“He was beating Ethan.”
“He was disciplining him.”
Gary pulled the belt through his fist, tightening the loop.
Brooke reached into her pocket and removed her phone.
Gary laughed.
“Who are you going to call? Your little school friends?”
Brooke selected the number she had saved beneath a false name three nights earlier.
The call connected immediately.
“I need you now,” she said.
A man’s voice answered through the speaker.
“Stay away from the children.”
Gary’s face changed.
Melissa’s arms dropped.
Three heavy knocks struck the front door.
The first shook the frame.
The second made Ethan grab Brooke’s sleeve.
During the third, the doorknob slowly turned.
Gary stepped away from the table.
“Who did you call?”
Brooke looked directly at her mother.
“The person you spent five years making us believe had abandoned us.”
The front door opened several inches.
A man’s broad shoulder appeared through the gap, followed by the badge of the detective standing beside him.
Gary lifted the belt again.
Melissa whispered one name.
“Daniel.”
Daniel Carter pushed the door fully open.
He was their late father’s older brother.

And he was staring at the green paint smeared across Gary’s hands as though he already knew exactly what Ethan had found.
👉 Brooke had called for help—but Daniel’s reaction to the green paint revealed that the violence in the kitchen had begun over something far more dangerous than a broken glass.
