Chapter 8 - WHAT GARY BOUGHT THE NEXT MORNING
Wells Home Restoration purchased a scaffolding anchor at 7:14 a.m. the morning after Luke’s death.
Gary paid cash.
The invoice described the item as an emergency replacement for Site 14.
The construction company denied authorizing the purchase.
Its foreman had retired but remembered Gary arriving before investigators released the site.
“He said Luke asked him to replace a damaged section,” the foreman told Mara.
“Luke was dead.”
“I know that now.”
Gary removed the cracked anchor and installed a new one.
By the time safety inspectors returned, the equipment no longer matched what failed during the accident.
The official report blamed Luke for attaching his line incorrectly.
The missing anchor could prove otherwise.
Mara searched Gary’s storage yard.
She found piles of rusted equipment, old tools, and construction debris. The original anchor was not there.
A ledger showed Gary sold scrap metal two days after the accident.
The buyer’s records had been destroyed years earlier.
The green safety tag remained the only physical piece he kept.
“Why keep it?” Brooke asked.
Daniel answered quietly.
“Some people keep proof because destroying everything feels dangerous. Evidence becomes insurance against partners.”
“Partners like Mom?”
“Possibly.”
Financial records placed Melissa and Gary together before Luke’s death.
Wells Restoration received three payments from an account under Melissa’s maiden name.
The first occurred four months before the accident.
She had told everyone she met Gary years later.
The lie was no longer sustainable.
Mara questioned Melissa again.
This time, the district attorney attended.
Melissa admitted hiring Gary privately to inspect repairs Luke refused to fund.
“Did you have a relationship with him?”
“No.”
“Why did you pay through an account your husband did not know existed?”
“Luke controlled money.”
“The house was paid for.”
“He controlled everything else.”
Brooke listened from another room with Grace.
Her mother used the language of victimhood carefully. Some of it may have been true. Luke may have monitored spending or argued about repairs.
None of it explained the hidden payments, false accident timeline, stolen settlement funds, or Ethan’s abuse.
“Did Gary know the Site 14 anchor was unsafe?” Mara asked.
Melissa stared at the table.
“I don’t know.”
“Were you at the site before Luke fell?”
“No.”
“Daniel saw you.”
“He is lying.”
A traffic camera archive had been preserved because the accident triggered litigation.
Melissa’s car entered the industrial road at 7:42 a.m.
Luke fell at 8:11.
She was there.
Her attorney ended the interview.
Gary began negotiating separately.
He wanted reduced charges on the trust fraud in exchange for information about the missing green envelope.
Prosecutors made no promise.
Gary claimed Melissa took it from Ethan’s room and hid it outside the house.
“Where?”
“She never told me.”
“What was inside?”
“Photographs. A recording. Luke’s notes.”
“Did they implicate you?”
Gary smiled without humor.
“They implicated all of us.”
Brooke felt sick.
“All of us” could mean Gary and Melissa.
It could include Daniel.
It could include the construction company.
Gary refused to explain further without a formal agreement.
Mara showed him the kitchen recording.
Ethan’s cries filled the interview room.
“You beat a child because he found evidence.”
“I lost control.”
“You tightened the belt before Brooke called Daniel.”
Gary looked away.
“You knew who she was calling?”
“No.”
“You turned pale before Daniel entered.”
Gary’s silence answered.
He had been expecting Daniel eventually.
The missing envelope was not only about Luke’s accident.
It may have contained a message intended for his brother.
After the interview, Brooke returned to Daniel’s house with Ethan.
For the first time, they slept in rooms where no one locked doors from the outside.
Ethan placed his stuffed bear—no, he had no stuffed bear in the premise; keep simple—his sketchbook beside the pillow.
Brooke left the hallway light on.
At midnight, Daniel received a message from an unknown number.
A photograph showed the green envelope resting on a wooden table.
The message read:
Drop the guardianship challenge, or Luke’s children learn what you did at Site 14.
Daniel showed Brooke immediately.
He did not hide it.
That choice earned the beginning of trust.
Then Brooke noticed the table beneath the envelope.
It was her mother’s kitchen table.
