Chapter 6 - THE HEARING FROM THE HOSPITAL

Melissa appeared on the court screen wearing a pale blouse and no makeup.

She looked exhausted, frightened, and maternal.

Brooke recognized the performance immediately.

Gary joined from the county detention center.

His attorney argued that the kitchen incident involved a difficult teenager, a disruptive child, and a stepfather who lost patience during a crisis.

Then Dr. Hale described Ethan’s injuries.

The courtroom became still.

He explained that bruises at different healing stages proved repeated trauma. The belt marks were recent. The hand-shaped bruises on Ethan’s shoulder matched forceful restraint.

The judge asked Melissa whether she had noticed them.

“I believed he bruised himself during his episodes.”

“Which physician diagnosed these episodes?”

Melissa hesitated.

“We were arranging an evaluation.”

“There is no diagnosis?”

“Not yet.”

Detective Mara played Brooke’s pantry recording.

Melissa’s voice said:

Do not mark his face. We need the school photograph tomorrow.

The maternal expression disappeared.

Gary’s attorney objected.

The judge allowed the recording.

Then Melissa’s own video played, beginning only after Brooke entered.

The contrast exposed the staging more clearly than any accusation could.

Grace presented the financial records, false behavioral reports, and messages coordinating the provocation.

Melissa tried to explain.

“I was afraid of Brooke. She has become obsessed with money.”

Brooke leaned toward the microphone.

“I didn’t know how much money existed until yesterday.”

The judge looked at her.

“Did you understand that kicking Gary could be used against you?”

“Not in that second. I saw the belt above Ethan.”

“Would you do it again?”

Brooke thought carefully.

“I would get between them again. I would call police sooner. I would not let him keep hitting my brother because I was afraid someone might call me aggressive.”

The judge nodded.

Ethan was not required to testify.

His recorded medical interview was enough.

The court suspended Melissa’s parental authority temporarily and prohibited both adults from contacting the children.

Gary remained in custody.

Melissa was ordered to surrender the house and financial records to investigators. She would stay with her sister pending possible charges.

Daniel received temporary placement authority, supervised by Grace and the court.

Brooke objected to the wording.

“I want Ethan to stay with me.”

“You are still a minor for twelve days,” the judge said gently. “After your birthday, the arrangement can be reviewed.”

Daniel spoke.

“My home has two rooms available. Brooke and Ethan can remain together. I will sign any supervision condition the court requires.”

The judge approved.

After the hearing, Melissa requested five minutes with Brooke.

Grace advised against it.

Brooke agreed only if the call was recorded.

Her mother appeared alone.

“You have no idea what Daniel wants.”

“He wants an audit.”

“He wants the trust.”

“He asked for an independent bank.”

“He is trying to look noble.”

Brooke watched her mother’s face.

“Did you know Gary worked with Dad before he died?”

Melissa became still.

“Gary repaired properties for many people.”

“Dad named him in a recording.”

“Luke was suspicious of everyone.”

“What was in the green envelope?”

“I never saw it.”

Police had found her photograph of the compartment.

Her denial carried no strength.

Brooke leaned closer.

“You watched Gary beat Ethan because you thought he found something.”

Melissa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was protecting what was left.”

“Of the money?”

“Of this family.”

“You put us outside the family every time we told the truth.”

Melissa’s sadness hardened.

“You think Daniel saved you. Ask him why he was at Site 14 the morning your father died.”

The call ended.

Brooke turned toward Daniel.

His face had gone pale.

“You were there?”

Daniel took several seconds to answer.

“Yes.”

“You told Detective Mara you didn’t know Gary’s company worked there.”

“I didn’t.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

Daniel looked toward Ethan’s hospital room.

“Luke called me that morning. I arrived after the fall.”

“Why didn’t you say that?”

“Because I left before police finished questioning witnesses.”

“Why?”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Melissa told me Luke had accused me of stealing from him.”

Brooke felt the floor shift beneath her.

The people helping them were finally exposing Gary and Melissa.
