Chapter 21 - WHAT MELISSA RECORDED FOR THE LAWYER
Melissa requested another meeting after learning Samuel had survived.
Brooke did not want to attend.
Ethan surprised her.
“I want one question.”
Grace arranged a recorded video call. Ethan remained off camera until he decided otherwise.
Melissa wore jail clothing. Her hair had begun turning gray near the temples.
She looked toward the empty chair beside Brooke.
“Is Ethan there?”
Brooke did not answer for him.
Ethan moved into view.
Melissa’s face changed.
“Baby—”
“No.”
The single word stopped her.
He opened his sketchbook and displayed the drawing of the kitchen doorway.
Melissa stood with her arms folded while Gary raised the belt.
“Why happy?” Ethan asked.
Melissa closed her eyes.
“I wasn’t happy.”
Ethan pointed toward her drawn face.
“Relief.”
The word came from Brooke’s original description.
Melissa nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Brooke kicked him.”
“You wanted.”
“Yes.”
“Why me?”
Melissa began crying.
Not loudly.
Not in a way that asked the children to comfort her.
“Because Gary said you found Luke’s evidence. Paul said we needed Brooke declared unstable. Crane promised Horizon would take you quickly. I told myself one confrontation would solve everything.”
“You knew belt?”
“I knew Gary would frighten you.”
“Did you know belt?”
Melissa hesitated.
“Yes.”
Brooke felt Ethan’s hand close around the edge of the table.
Melissa continued.
“I told him not to mark your face.”
Ethan looked at the drawing again.
Then he closed the book.
“No more question.”
He left the camera frame with his advocate.
Brooke remained.
“Did you create the recorded warning used during the blackout?”
“Paul recorded every consultation.”
Melissa remembered telling him years earlier that Luke trusted Samuel enough to hide copies with him. Paul said the wooden box had to be recovered before Daniel found it.
The sentence had been edited from that meeting.
Melissa had not made the recent call.
But her own words gave the intruder a weapon.
“What did Paul know before Dad died?” Brooke asked.
“Everything about the collateral.”
“Was he at Site 14 the night Daniel held the tool?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To photograph anyone who might later challenge us.”
“Us?”
Melissa looked down.
She, Gary and Paul had already discussed what would happen if Luke exposed GREEN-14.
They prepared separate stories.
Daniel wanted money.
Samuel acted alone.
Luke had become paranoid.
Melissa knew nothing about the repairs.
When Luke died, they selected the version requiring the fewest people to ask questions.
Paul created the false Daniel account.
Melissa obtained the restraining order.
Gary replaced the anchor.
Crane moved the funds.
Samuel disappeared.
Daniel stayed silent.
The story succeeded because each adult carried one piece of truth that made another person’s lie seem possible.
“Why did you preserve the original green envelope?” Brooke asked.
“I couldn’t destroy Luke’s letter.”
“You destroyed his complaint.”
“Gary did.”
“You let him.”
“Yes.”
Melissa had kept the envelope because some part of her believed she might need evidence against Gary.
She moved it between the house, storage unit and Paul’s office.
When the investigation began, Paul mailed it anonymously to Brooke to shift suspicion toward Daniel and Samuel.
He expected the new photograph to fracture the family helping the children.
Instead, it exposed more evidence.
Melissa looked at Brooke.
“I loved you.”
Brooke did not deny that possibility.
“You loved being the person who decided what we were allowed to know.”
Melissa’s mouth trembled.
“Yes.”
“That was not enough.”
“No.”
Brooke ended the call.
Outside the interview room, Ethan had drawn another picture.
A woman stood on one side of a door.
Two children stood on the other.
The door was open, but neither child crossed it.
“Is that Mom?” Brooke asked.
“Yes.”
“Why open?”
“She can see.”
“Why don’t we go through?”
Ethan selected a blue crayon.
“Not our house.”
The drawing did not erase Melissa.
