Chapter 10 - THE PHOTOGRAPH FROM SITE 14
Daniel stopped denying pieces.
He gave Mara a complete statement.
Luke called him two days before the accident and asked him to come to Site 14 early Monday morning. He believed someone was replacing damaged safety equipment and falsifying inspection records.
Daniel arrived at 7:20.
Gary was already there.
Melissa came shortly afterward.
Luke confronted all three.
Gary admitted performing repairs without proper authorization.
Melissa admitted paying him privately.
Daniel had no financial role, but Luke accused him of ignoring earlier warnings because Daniel’s accounting firm handled books for the construction company.
“I signed quarterly reports,” Daniel said. “I never inspected equipment.”
“You saw irregular repair payments?” Mara asked.
“Yes.”
“And did nothing?”
“I asked Luke about them. He said he was handling it.”
“You protected your client.”
“I protected my career.”
Brooke watched from behind the observation glass.
Daniel had not tried to steal settlement money.
He had failed through self-interest.
That failure gave Melissa enough truth to build a larger lie.
At Site 14, Luke threatened to report the company, Gary, and Daniel’s accounting firm.
The argument became heated.
Daniel left at 8:02.
Melissa remained.
Gary claimed he left at 8:05.
Luke fell at 8:11.
The traffic camera showed Gary’s truck exiting the industrial road at 8:24.
He lied.
Melissa’s car left at 8:29.
Both were present when Luke fell.
The original accident investigator had relied on their statements without checking the traffic archive because the construction company settled quickly with the family.
Daniel’s accounting firm helped process the payment.
He resigned months later but never reopened the questions.
“I told myself Luke had made a mistake with the safety line,” he said.
Brooke entered the interview room.
“You knew Gary lied about leaving.”
“I didn’t see the traffic footage.”
“You knew Mom lied about being there.”
“Yes.”
“And you stayed quiet because the settlement protected everyone.”
“Yes.”
“Including us.”
Daniel looked at her.
“The money paid for your future. I used that to justify silence.”
“It paid Gary.”
“I know that now.”
Brooke’s anger did not vanish.
But the full truth differed from Melissa’s accusation.
Daniel had not caused Luke’s fall.
He had helped create the conditions where the wrong story became permanent.
Mara searched archived insurance files.
Luke had submitted a confidential safety complaint three hours before his death. The email named Gary and described an unauthorized equipment swap.
The message was marked withdrawn ten minutes after the accident.
Someone accessed Luke’s phone.
Melissa knew his passcode.
Gary’s fingerprints had been found on the device, but investigators dismissed that because he claimed he tried to call emergency services.
Phone records showed no emergency call from Luke’s phone.
Instead, someone deleted photographs and withdrew the complaint.
The green envelope likely contained copies Luke printed before the fall.
Melissa and Gary had been searching for them ever since.
Ethan found the compartment accidentally.
Brooke’s approaching birthday made the discovery urgent.
At the next hearing, the judge granted Brooke early limited emancipation for financial and medical decisions. She and Ethan remained together under supervised placement with Daniel, but an independent advocate held final authority over the trust.
Daniel supported the restriction.
Melissa and Gary lost every financial role.
Gary was charged with felony child abuse, unlawful restraint, fraud, and evidence tampering. Charges connected to Luke’s death remained under review.
Melissa was arrested after the storage-unit evidence proved she planned to flee with Ethan and manipulated the trust.
Before being taken away, she asked to speak with Mara.
“I can tell you where the original safety anchor is.”
“What do you want?”
“Protection from Gary.”
“He is in custody.”
Melissa looked toward the camera.
“You think the belt was the worst thing he has done?”
She claimed Gary had kept the anchor for years and recently moved it to the old Wells workshop.
Police searched the building.
The anchor was there.
Its metal surface had been partially ground down, but fracture marks remained.
A forensic engineer determined it had not failed naturally.
