Chapter 14 - THE FIVE MISSING MINUTES
Daniel asked to view the photograph before answering questions.
He did not deny the jacket.
“That is me.”
“Why did you lie about leaving?” Mara asked.
“I walked toward the parking lot at 8:02. Luke called me back.”
“What did he want?”
“He gave me the safe-deposit key.”
“The brass key?”
“Yes.”
“Then why was it behind the pantry wall?”
“I returned it to Melissa after the funeral. She said the box contained private marital records.”
Brooke stared at him.
“You gave her the key to Dad’s evidence.”
“I did not know what was inside.”
“You knew he had called you back minutes before he died.”
“Yes.”
Daniel explained the five missing minutes.
Luke told him Gary had cut the anchor. He asked Daniel to take the key and contact a state investigator if anything happened.
Daniel placed the key inside his jacket.
Then Melissa approached.
The argument resumed.
Luke climbed toward the platform to retrieve his camera.
Daniel turned toward his car because he did not want to be dragged into another confrontation.
He heard metal tear behind him.
When he ran back, Luke was already falling.
“Why didn’t you tell police he gave you the key?” Mara asked.
“I panicked. Melissa said Luke had accused me of helping the insurance fraud. Gary said the key proved I had taken documents. I thought I would be blamed.”
“So you returned it.”
“Yes.”
“To the person Luke suspected.”
“Yes.”
Daniel’s shame no longer hid behind careful words.
That was why Luke wrote that Daniel mistook hesitation for fairness.
At the most important moment, he chose self-protection.
His failure did not equal Gary’s sabotage or Melissa’s concealment.
It still mattered.
Brooke asked whether he would have told the truth if the photograph had not surfaced.
Daniel took a long time.
“I want to say yes.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“No. I don’t know.”
The honesty hurt less than another promise.
Mara amended his statement and referred it to prosecutors. Daniel could face obstruction charges for concealing evidence and providing false information.
He did not ask Brooke to defend him.
The court reviewed Ethan’s placement.
Grace proposed that the siblings move into a small trust-owned apartment with a licensed family-support worker visiting daily. Brooke could act as Ethan’s primary caregiver while Daniel’s legal situation developed.
Ethan wanted Brooke.
Brooke wanted independence.
The judge approved the arrangement.
Daniel helped carry boxes but did not assume he would remain welcome.
At the door, he gave Brooke the house key.
“You decide when I visit.”
She accepted it.
“I’m not cutting you out.”
“You are allowed to.”
“I know.”
That difference mattered.
Melissa entered a partial plea admitting financial fraud, child endangerment, evidence tampering, and removal of the safety warning. She continued denying that she intended Luke’s death.
Gary rejected every agreement after prosecutors added a murder charge.
Mercer lost his law license pending trial.
The trust began recovering stolen funds through asset seizures.
Brooke enrolled Ethan in a new school and arranged counseling with a specialist who spoke directly to him rather than through family.
The simple future felt unfamiliar.
Then the apartment received a sealed package.
No return address.
Inside was the green envelope.
The original.
It had not been shredded.
Someone had preserved it.
The envelope contained the Site 14 photographs already recovered from the bank, plus one item Luke had not listed.
A photograph dated six months before his death.
Melissa sat at a restaurant table with Gary.
Daniel sat across from them.
All three appeared to be discussing a contract.
Brooke looked toward Daniel, who had come to help install the apartment lock.
“You said you didn’t know Mom and Gary were working together.”
Daniel’s face emptied.
“I didn’t remember this meeting.”
The back of the photograph carried Luke’s handwriting:
They all say the meeting was about repairs. It was not.
Beneath that sentence was a second line:
Ask Daniel about the green account.
Daniel sat down slowly.
“There was no green account in the trust.”
“Then what did Dad mean?”
Daniel looked toward the envelope.
