Chapter 15 - THE GREEN ACCOUNT

Daniel explained the restaurant meeting.

His accounting firm had been asked to create a temporary project account for Site 14 repairs. Gary represented Wells Restoration. Melissa attended because Luke’s house had been listed as collateral for a private repair loan.

“That makes no sense,” Brooke said. “Dad owned the house.”

“Luke never approved the collateral. Melissa provided a copied signature.”

“You discovered the forgery?”

“Not during the meeting. Months later.”

“And did you report it?”

“No.”

The account was coded GREEN-14 inside Daniel’s firm.

It received insurance advances before the staged equipment failure. Gary withdrew repair payments. Melissa received a consulting fee. Daniel’s firm collected administrative costs.

Luke discovered the account and believed it funded the sabotage.

Daniel closed it after the accident but did not preserve every record.

“I was afraid the forged collateral would implicate my firm,” he said.

“So Dad died trying to expose money all three of you touched.”

“Yes.”

Brooke looked at the photograph again.

The story was not divided into one innocent rescuer and two villains.

Gary cut the anchor.

Melissa removed the warning and concealed the evidence.

Daniel protected records and reputation instead of exposing them.

Their choices were not equal.

They converged around Luke anyway.

“What was missing from the account?” Grace asked.

Daniel frowned.

“There should have been another deposit. Two hundred thousand dollars entered the day before the accident, then disappeared.”

“Who authorized it?”

“The electronic approval used Luke’s credentials.”

Luke had discovered a transfer made in his name.

The green envelope contained a bank routing slip with the receiving account partially visible. Grace traced the old number through archived records.

The money went to a company called Carter Family Holdings.

Daniel had never heard of it.

Melissa denied creating it.

Gary refused to answer.

Corporate filings listed the organizer as Luke Carter.

The signature looked genuine.

Brooke felt a new uncertainty enter the room.

Had Luke created the account while investigating?

Had someone forged him again?

The archived company address belonged to a post-office box that remained active.

The next morning, Grace and Mara obtained access.

Inside were years of unopened statements and one recent envelope.

Someone had deposited fifty dollars into the dormant account two weeks earlier.

The transaction came from a bank branch near Brooke and Ethan’s new apartment.

A message accompanied it:

The children found Site 14. Begin the second audit.

Mara increased security around the building.

Brooke refused to return to hiding.

She attended school enrollment with Ethan, signed the independent trust agreement, and continued preparing for the trials.

Fear remained.

It no longer made decisions alone.

That evening, Ethan spread crayons across the apartment floor.

He selected the green one.

“What are you drawing?” Brooke asked.

“Our new kitchen.”

“Why green?”

“Because it’s ours now.”

A knock sounded at the door.

Three slow impacts.

Brooke and Ethan froze.

Daniel stood several feet away, hands visible.

Grace called police while Brooke checked the security camera.

A gray-haired man waited in the hallway holding a wooden box and a photograph of Luke.

Mara’s officers reached him before the door opened.

He identified himself as Samuel Price, Luke’s former Site 14 supervisor.

He had been missing from every accident record because the construction company paid him to leave Ohio.

Inside the wooden box were the original GREEN-14 bank ledgers.

Samuel looked directly into the hallway camera.

“Luke knew he might die,” he said. “But he was wrong about who ordered the anchor cut.”

Behind Brooke, Daniel stopped breathing.

Samuel raised a second photograph.

It showed Daniel standing beside the damaged anchor with the cutting tool in his hand.

The timestamp was from the night before Luke’s death.

Daniel whispered, “That photograph is impossible.”

Then Ethan pointed toward the bottom corner.

A reflection showed someone else taking the picture from inside Melissa’s car.

The apartment lights suddenly went out.

Brooke’s phone rang from an unknown number.

Her mother’s recorded voice filled the darkness:

“Do not open Samuel’s box until you know why Luke trusted him.”

The lock on the front door began turning from the outside.
