Chapter 9 - THE ACCOUNT UNDER MELISSA’S MAIDEN NAME
The unknown message came from a prepaid phone purchased with cash.
The photograph’s metadata had been stripped.
But the wooden table contained a small burn mark shaped like a crescent.
Brooke remembered it.
Melissa moved that table out of the house the previous summer, claiming it had been donated.
Police traced it to a storage unit rented under Melissa’s maiden name.
The unit contained furniture, financial files, packed suitcases, and a safe.
Inside the safe was $96,000 in cash.
There were also passports for Melissa and Ethan, airline tickets to Arizona, and school-enrollment forms under a new address.
Brooke’s name appeared nowhere.
Melissa had been preparing to leave with Ethan after the guardianship hearing.
Gary was not included.
She intended to remove both Brooke and Gary from control of the trust, then take Ethan’s account with her.
The green envelope was not inside the safe.
But the original kitchen table was.
A camera tripod stood beside it.
Melissa had photographed the envelope before moving it again.
Mara found several staged images.
The envelope beside Daniel’s business card.
The envelope inside Brooke’s backpack.
The envelope beneath Gary’s tools.
Melissa had prepared multiple versions of who possessed it.
She could blame whichever person became most useful.
The safe also held records from the account under her maiden name.
More than $600,000 of the children’s trust money passed through it over five years.
Some paid Gary.
Some funded Melissa’s private escape plan.
A significant amount went to Paul Mercer, the attorney who helped her obtain the old restraining order against Daniel and drafted the current guardianship petitions.
Mercer claimed his fees were legitimate.
Grace disagreed.
The bills included charges for creating behavioral narratives, beneficiary control strategy, and post-majority incapacity planning.
He did not merely represent Melissa.
He designed the legal method for keeping Brooke powerless after eighteen.
The court froze his accounts and referred him for investigation.
Melissa’s financial position collapsed in a single day.
Without trust payments, she could not maintain the storage unit, attorney fees, or hidden apartment in Arizona.
She requested another recorded call with Brooke.
This time, her voice lacked the practiced softness.
“Gary is going to say I planned everything.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“You paid him before Dad died.”
“For repairs.”
“You were at Site 14.”
“I went because Luke called me.”
“Why did Dad call you?”
Melissa’s eyes moved toward someone outside the camera.
“He wanted to accuse me.”
“Of what?”
“Seeing Gary.”
The admission finally came.
She and Gary had begun an affair six months before Luke’s death.
Luke discovered the payments and confronted her.
“Did Gary damage the safety equipment?” Brooke asked.
“No.”
“Did you know it was damaged?”
Melissa’s breathing changed.
“I knew Luke was collecting proof about something at the site.”
“Why were you there that morning?”
“To stop him from ruining everyone.”
“What happened?”
“Ask Daniel.”
Brooke leaned closer.
“I am asking you.”
Melissa lowered her voice.
“Daniel argued with Luke beside the scaffolding.”
Daniel had admitted speaking to Luke after the fall, not before.
If Melissa was telling the truth, he had lied again.
“What did they argue about?”
“The settlement Luke planned to expose.”
“What settlement?”
Melissa looked directly into the camera.
“The construction company was going to pay Luke to stay quiet about unsafe equipment. Daniel wanted half.”
The call ended when her attorney intervened.
Brooke confronted Daniel.
He denied demanding money.
But he admitted meeting Luke beside the scaffolding before the fall.
“I arrived earlier than I told Mara.”
“Why lie?”
“Because Luke asked me to leave before Melissa arrived.”
“You said she was already there.”
“She came as I was walking toward the parking lot.”
Every corrected detail made him harder to trust.
“What did Dad want?”
“He had discovered the company planned to stage a minor equipment failure, claim insurance, and repair the site quietly. Gary was involved in replacing parts.”
“Did Dad accept money?”
“No. He wanted evidence before reporting them.”
“Did you want half?”
Daniel’s face showed genuine shock.
“No.”
“Then why did Mom say that?”
“Because she needs you to distrust the only adult helping you.”
“That doesn’t make your lies disappear.”
“No.”
He had no defense.
Brooke left the room.
Ethan was sitting on the stairs, listening.
“Is Uncle Daniel bad too?” he asked.
Brooke looked toward the man standing alone in the kitchen.
“I don’t know yet.”
That uncertainty was painful.
But she would not replace one false certainty with another.
Grace called with news from the storage-unit search.
Investigators had found fibers from the green envelope inside a document shredder.
The envelope itself may have been destroyed.
One photograph within the staged set showed a corner of the contents.
A man stood near Site 14 wearing a green hard hat.
When technicians enlarged the image, they recognized Gary.
Beside him stood Melissa.
