Chapter 2 - WHAT THEIR MOTHER RECORDED

Detective Mara Ellis entered before Daniel.
Her hand remained near her holster while she took in the broken glass, overturned chair, belt, frightened child, and Brooke’s torn shirt.
“Put the belt down.”
Gary tried to smile.
“This is a family misunderstanding.”
“Put it down.”
He released it.
The leather landed inside the spilled water.
Melissa stepped forward immediately.
“My daughter attacked my husband. He was trying to restrain Ethan after the boy became destructive.”
Ethan pressed himself behind Brooke.
“I didn’t.”
Melissa raised her phone.
“I recorded Brooke kicking Gary.”
Mara looked at the screen but did not take it.
“What happened before the recording began?”
“Ethan smashed a glass and attacked the kitchen.”
“With what?”
Melissa hesitated.
“The chair.”
The chair was nearly twice Ethan’s weight.
Mara looked toward the child’s arms. Dark bruises rose beneath both sleeves.
Daniel moved closer, but Brooke lifted one hand.
“Don’t touch him yet.”
Daniel stopped immediately.
That mattered to Ethan. His shoulders lowered by the smallest amount.
Mara called for paramedics and requested another unit. Gary began protesting that no one needed medical treatment.
Brooke removed her own phone.
“I recorded before I came into the room.”
Gary stared at her.
“You weren’t here.”
“I left my phone in the pantry.”
She had hidden it there that morning after hearing Gary threaten Ethan over breakfast. The camera saw only the lower kitchen cabinets, but the microphone captured everything.
Brooke played the file.
Gary’s voice filled the room.
Tell me where you put the envelope.
Ethan answered through tears.
I don’t know.
You scraped the green paint off the wall.
I only wanted my crayon.
Then came the sound of glass shattering.
Melissa’s voice followed.
Do not mark his face. We need the school photograph tomorrow.
Mara’s expression hardened.
Gary stepped toward Brooke’s phone.
Daniel blocked him.
“Don’t.”
Gary looked at him with recognition and hatred.
“You have no right to be here.”
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“Brooke asked me to come.”
“She’s seventeen.”
“She is also the beneficiary whose lawyer received photographs of Ethan’s injuries three days ago.”
Melissa looked at Brooke.
“You sent him pictures?”
“I sent everything.”
The paramedics arrived.
Ethan refused to let anyone examine him until Brooke promised to remain within sight. When a medic lifted his pant leg, long red marks crossed his thigh. Older bruises spread across his calf and ankle.
Gary claimed Ethan injured himself while climbing fences.
There were no fences behind the house.
Mara placed Gary in handcuffs.
Melissa’s confidence began to collapse.
“You cannot arrest him because of a teenager’s recording.”
“I’m detaining him because there is evidence he assaulted a child.”
“And Brooke?”
“For protecting her brother?”
“She kicked him.”
“After he raised a belt.”
Melissa held up her own video again.
Mara finally took the phone.
The clip began with Brooke entering the room.
It showed the kick.
It excluded Gary striking Ethan.
It excluded the threats.
It excluded Melissa’s instructions.
“You started recording at a very convenient moment,” Mara said.
Melissa went silent.
Daniel approached the pantry.
Green paint marked the floor beneath a narrow section of wall paneling. A child’s crayon had rolled into the gap where the paint had chipped away.
Daniel crouched.
“Ethan, did you find something behind here?”
The boy looked toward his mother.
Melissa’s face had turned pale.
Ethan whispered, “A metal door.”
Gary twisted against the handcuffs.
“Don’t open that.”
Every person in the kitchen turned toward him.
Mara photographed the panel and ordered everyone away from it until a search warrant arrived.
Daniel stared at Melissa.
“What did you hide in Luke’s house?”
Brooke had not heard anyone call it that in years.
Gary always called it his house.
Melissa called it the family house.
But her father, Luke Carter, had purchased it before he died.
Daniel’s words restored the ownership Gary had spent years erasing.
The paramedics guided Ethan toward the ambulance.
As Brooke followed, her brother tugged her sleeve and whispered:
“The green envelope wasn’t there anymore.”
“What green envelope?”
“The one with Dad’s name.”

Behind them, Melissa closed her eyes.
👉 Ethan had discovered a hidden compartment linked to their late father, but someone had removed the most important envelope before police arrived.
