Chapter 4 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE GREEN WALL
Police opened the pantry compartment under warrant.
The steel door had been fitted between wall studs during the house’s construction. Luke Carter had built it himself, according to Daniel.
“He kept insurance papers there,” Daniel said. “Emergency cash. Copies of anything Melissa’s lawyer couldn’t alter.”
Mara looked at him.
“Why would he expect alterations?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Luke became suspicious during the final year of his life.”
“Suspicious of whom?”
“He never told me clearly.”
Inside the compartment, investigators found a trust agreement, bank statements, property records, and an old digital recorder with a dead battery.
One folder documented the settlement paid after Luke’s fatal workplace accident.
The settlement created separate accounts for Brooke and Ethan.
The combined original value had been $2.4 million.
Current statements showed less than $900,000.
Brooke stared at the missing amount.
“Where did it go?”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“That is what I tried to investigate five years ago.”
Melissa had authority to use limited funds for housing, education, and medical care.
The withdrawals described private tutors Brooke never had, therapy Ethan never received, and major repairs that were never completed.
One company appeared repeatedly.
Wells Home Restoration.
Gary’s business.
He had been receiving trust money before marrying Melissa.
Brooke looked at Daniel.
“Mom said they met two years after Dad died.”
“That is what she told me too.”
The old digital recorder powered on after a technician replaced the battery.
Most files contained Luke dictating account numbers and repair details.
The final recording was different.
His voice sounded tired.
“If something happens to me, Daniel must audit every payment to Wells Restoration. Melissa says Gary only handles emergency repairs. I do not believe that anymore.”
Brooke’s skin prickled.
Her father knew Gary.
Not socially, perhaps.
But financially.
The fatal accident occurred six weeks after that recording.
Luke fell from scaffolding at a construction site outside Columbus. The investigation blamed a defective safety line.
Gary’s company had supplied temporary repairs at the site.
Daniel looked stunned.
“I never saw this.”
“Did you know Wells Restoration worked there?” Mara asked.
“No.”
The green envelope likely contained the supporting documents Luke had separated from the main file.
Gary and Melissa had removed it because Ethan discovered the compartment.
The search of the house uncovered more evidence.
Inside Melissa’s bedroom closet was a locked file box containing behavioral reports about both children.
Brooke’s described defiance, aggression, and obsessive suspicion.
Ethan’s described violent outbursts, property destruction, and manipulative crying.
The reports were unsigned.
A family-court petition named Melissa and Gary as permanent financial guardians beyond Brooke’s eighteenth birthday due to her alleged emotional instability.
Brooke turned eighteen in twelve days.
At that age, she would gain the right to demand an independent trust accounting.
Gary and Melissa needed a judge to declare her incapable before then.
The kitchen confrontation had given them exactly the image they wanted.
Brooke kicking Gary.
Melissa had recorded it from the doorway.
“They wanted me to attack him,” Brooke said.
Mara nodded.
“Gary hurt Ethan in front of you because he knew you would intervene.”
Ethan covered his face.
“This is my fault.”
Brooke took his hands.
“No. They used your pain because they knew I love you.”
Daniel looked toward the compartment.
“They also believed Ethan had found something capable of destroying more than their guardianship plan.”
Mara’s team searched every page.
One inventory note, written by Luke, listed the contents of the missing green envelope:
Site 14 photographs.
Safety-line purchase records.
Private meeting audio.
