Chapter 17 - Lily’s second interview
Lily spoke again later, with appropriate safeguards.
She said something that changed how I understood the morning.
Before Emma came downstairs, Vanessa and Diane were already discussing me.
Vanessa said:
“Rachel lets Emma run everything.”
Diane said:
“She’ll be down soon. Just keep breakfast calm.”
Then Emma entered.
When she sat in Lily’s chair, Vanessa told Lily:
“Make her move.”
Lily said:
“It’s okay.”
Vanessa became angry at Lily too.
“You always let her take your stuff.”
Lily answered:
“It’s just a chair.”
That sentence humiliated Vanessa.
Not because of Emma.
Because her own daughter rejected the conflict.
So when Diane said:
“Vanessa, handle it. Rachel will be down any second,”
Vanessa was already furious at both girls.
She moved toward Emma.
Emma took a bite of eggs.
Maybe because she was hungry.
Maybe because four-year-olds do things at exactly the wrong moment.
Vanessa swung.
Lily said:
“I thought she was going to hit the table.”
Then:
“But she hit Emma.”
“Did Vanessa say anything after?”
“She said, ‘Look what you made me do.’”
That phrase did not appear clearly on camera audio.
But it sounded like Vanessa.
Maybe Lily remembered correctly.
Maybe memory had mixed with later conversation.
Prosecutors did not rely heavily on it.
