Chapter 20 - Family court
Vanessa remained Lily’s mother.
That mattered.
One terrible act against Emma did not automatically terminate all parental rights to Lily.
Family court evaluated:
Prior controlling behavior.
The breakfast incident.
Lily’s fear.
Vanessa’s treatment progress.
Owen’s home.
School stability.
Temporary orders continued.
Then evolved.
Vanessa initially received supervised visits with Lily.
No discussion of the criminal case in ways that pressured Lily.
No blaming Emma.
No asking Lily to change statements.
No punitive discipline beyond approved structure.
Lily’s therapist reported:
“Lily is highly attentive to adult mood and often attempts to prevent conflict.”
That broke my heart.
She had learned to become small inside rooms.
Owen worked on it.
Vanessa eventually did too.
At one supervised visit, Lily said:
“I don’t want a hug.”
Vanessa stopped.
“Okay.”
The supervisor documented it.
Such a small thing.
