Chapter 4 - The kitchen camera

Diane had a camera in the kitchen.

Of course she did.

A small security camera pointed toward the sliding back door because packages had once gone missing from the patio.

I had forgotten.

Police did not.

They asked my mother whether cameras covered the kitchen.

She said:

“Only the door.”

Technically true.

The wide lens included part of the breakfast table and stove.

Not every angle.

Audio.

Poor but usable.

Diane initially said she did not know the password.

The camera was linked to her tablet.

Police did not simply seize everything because they felt like it.

They obtained the footage first through Diane’s voluntary access after officers explained preservation concerns.

Later, the relevant file was formally retained.

The video showed the eight minutes before I came downstairs.

Emma entered.

Lily already sat at the table.

Vanessa was cooking.

Diane stood near the sink.

Emma reached for cereal.

Diane said something.

Audio was faint.

Then Lily got up.

Why?

She moved toward the refrigerator.

Emma climbed into Lily’s chair.

There were six chairs.

That detail mattered.

Not a scarce seat.

A specific one.

Lily returned holding juice.

Stopped.

Vanessa turned.

Then the audio became clearer.

“That’s Lily’s seat.”

Emma looked confused.

Lily said:

“It’s okay.”

Vanessa:

“No, it isn’t.”

There.

Lily tried to put the juice down.

Vanessa told her:

“Tell her.”

Lily whispered something.

Emma did not move.

Diane said from near the counter:

“Vanessa, handle it. Rachel will be down any second.”

My mother’s message had not lied.

She had told Vanessa to handle Emma.

But the full sentence mattered.

It did not say:

Hit her.

It sounded like:

Resolve this before Rachel arrives.

Why before I arrived?

That was the question.

Then Vanessa picked up the frying pan.

Not as a weapon initially.

She had been cooking with it.

She stepped toward the table.

“Move.”

Emma shook her head.

Four years old.

Maybe stubborn.

Maybe confused.

Vanessa raised the pan slightly.

Lily backed away.

Then Emma reached toward the plate.

Took a bite of egg.

Vanessa said:

“Are you kidding me?”

She swung.

The camera angle did not show exact contact because Vanessa’s body blocked part of Emma.

But it showed the motion.

Emma disappearing downward.

The pan falling.

Lily screaming.

Then me entering.

No accident from Emma grabbing the pan.

May you like

No child rushing Vanessa.

That ended those stories.
