Chapter 5 - My mother knew the camera existed

The hardest part was not the video.
It was what Diane did after.
While Emma was on the floor, my mother stood between me and Vanessa.
Video captured:
“Stop shouting.”
Then:
“Take her somewhere—she’s ruining everyone’s mood.”
It sounded worse on playback than in memory.
Because memory had panic around it.
Video had flatness.
The police officer asked Diane why she said that.
She answered:
“I was trying to de-escalate Rachel.”
“Why not check Emma?”
“Rachel was already with her.”
“Why protect Vanessa?”
“I wasn’t protecting Vanessa.”
The video showed her body physically positioned between us.
Her attorney later said:
“Standing position is not proof of intent.”
Correct.
Still revealing.
Then the officer asked:
“Why did you tell Vanessa to handle Emma before Rachel came downstairs?”
Diane said:
“Because Rachel overreacts whenever anyone corrects Emma.”
There.
“Corrects her how?”
“Basic manners.”
“Such as?”
“Sitting where she’s supposed to sit.”
The officer looked around the kitchen.
Six chairs.
“Was the seat assigned?”
“Lily always sits there.”
“Did Emma know that?”
“She should.”
Four years old.
The officer asked:
“Did you expect Vanessa to use physical force?”
“No.”
That answer mattered.
There was no evidence Diane instructed Vanessa to hit Emma.
No text saying:
Teach her a lesson.
No plan.
Her liability was more complicated.
She created and reinforced a secret system of correction around my child.

Then protected Vanessa after the escalation.
That would take months to understand.
