Chapter 10 - Maya’s teddy bear

Maya’s teddy bear became important for a strange reason.
Not because it contained a recording device.
Not because something was hidden inside.
Because Rachel claimed Maya had never slept in the basement.
She said Maya always slept upstairs due to night terrors.
The bear complicated that.
Maya would not sleep without it.
Everyone knew.
Police found dozens of family videos showing Maya carrying it to bed.
Leo told the interviewer:
“Bear stays downstairs when Dad’s gone because Rachel says we’re coming back.”
Investigators examined photographs from the house.
A home-security camera covering the upstairs hallway had clips from weeks earlier.
Several nights when Jason was away, Rachel carried blankets downstairs.
In two clips, she carried Maya’s teddy bear.
At 7:14 p.m.
The bear did not reappear upstairs until after 6 a.m.
Not proof by itself.
But Rachel’s categorical statement:
Maya never slept downstairs
May you like
was now false.
Small lies matter because they tell investigators where to look next.
