Chapter 17 - What happened on escape day

Tuesday morning began badly.

Leo woke downstairs.

His leg still hurt.

Maya had wet through her pajamas.

Rachel brought breakfast.

Leo asked to call Jason.

Rachel said later.

He asked again.

She told him to stop arguing.

Around noon Rachel prepared for a dental appointment.

Her sister had been supposed to come watch the children but canceled.

Rachel did not want to lose the appointment.

She made the decision that changed everything.

She left Leo and Maya downstairs.

Latched the door.

Planned to be gone less than an hour.

No adult in the house.

That was the piece she denied longest.

Phone-location records, appointment check-in, and a neighbor camera later established she left.

How did Leo get out?

Police believed the latch had not fully engaged.

Leo pushed repeatedly.

The door eventually opened.

No clever tool.

No dangerous technique.

Just a latch that failed to catch.

Leo later said:

“The door was being nice.”

He got Maya.

Her teddy bear.

His backpack.

Then left through the unlocked back door.

Why seven blocks?

He knew the pharmacy near the main road because Jason had taken them there.

Leo believed:

“People there have phones.”

His injured leg hurt too badly to walk normally.

He leaned against fences.

Crawled sections.

Maya stayed with him.

He moved toward the only public place he could remember.
