Chapter 14 - Jason knew one piece
Jason’s phone records changed our understanding.
Three weeks before the escape, Leo used Jason’s old tablet to send him a voice message while Jason was away.
The message lasted eleven seconds.
Leo said:
“Dad, Rachel says downstairs night because Maya won’t stop crying. Can we sleep upstairs tomorrow?”
Jason replied:
Listen to Rachel. I’ll be home Friday. Love you.
That was not proof Jason knew the door was locked.
But it proved he knew downstairs nights existed.
He had told police he thought the term meant occasional movie sleepovers.
Possible.
Then another message appeared.
Jason to Rachel:
He hates sleeping down there. Maybe ease up.
Rachel:
Then he needs to stop fighting every rule.
Jason:
Fine. Just don’t make it all night.
There.
My brother had known.
Not everything.
Enough.
He knew basement sleeping was used as discipline.
He asked Rachel not to make it all night.
Then went back to work.

That was the day our relationship changed permanently.
