Chapter 19 - Maya starts sleeping by the door

Maya slept in my guest room.
For the first month she refused to let me close the door.
“Open.”
“Okay.”
Even when hallway light disturbed her.
Open.
Leo wanted his door open too.
I installed small night-lights.
No locks.
One evening Maya carried her teddy bear into the hallway and slept on the floor.
I found her at midnight.
Did not move her immediately.
Sat beside her.
She woke.
“Uncle Tommy?”
“Yes.”
“Door open?”
“Yes.”
She let me carry her back.

Leo’s fear centered on basements.
My laundry room was downstairs.
He refused to go near the stairs.
Fine.
I moved laundry baskets myself.
