Chapter 26 - Leo runs

Two years and eleven months after the emergency room, Leo participated in a school fun run.

Not because the story required him to prove his leg worked.

Because he wanted the pizza party.

He was nine.

His tibia had healed.

Physical therapy restored normal strength.

The wrist healed too.

No permanent major limitation.

He was not the fastest.

Not close.

Halfway through, he slowed.

I felt my entire body tense.

Jason stood beside me.

Neither of us moved.

Leo walked for thirty seconds.

Then jogged again.

Finished.

Maya, six, screamed:

“You’re last!”

He was not last.

Sibling support remains imperfect.

Afterward Leo asked:

“Did you think my leg broke again?”

“No.”

He stared.

“Little.”

He smiled.

“Mine didn’t.”

That sentence had no metaphor for him.

May you like

Good.

His body belonged in the present.
