Chapter 11 - OSCAR CALLS ME

Protective communication rules were not yet finalized when Oscar called from a different number.
I answered because I thought it was the pediatrician.
“Lucy.”
My entire body tightened.
“Do not call me.”
“You kidnapped my daughter.”
“No.”
“You took her to Ray’s.”
“I’m her mother.”
“And I’m her father.”
“Yes.”
That answer stopped him.
I would not erase his legal status because he frightened me.
“I want Grace safe.”
“So do I.”
“Then come home.”
“You changed the locks.”
“I can give you a key.”
“Why did you change them?”
Silence.
“Security.”
“From me?”
“From Ray.”
Ray had never had a key.
“Oscar.”
“What?”
“Why was a notary scheduled?”
Silence.
“How do you know about that?”
There.
“Do not contact me again. Call Medina.”
“Lucy, please.”
His voice changed.
Soft.
“I panicked.”
I nearly broke.
There was the husband I knew.
“I thought if you came home and saw the debt, you’d leave.”
“You locked me out because you thought I’d leave?”
“I know how that sounds.”
“How should it sound?”
“I’m trying to keep our family together.”
I ended the call.
Then cried for an hour.
Abuse is easier when the person sounds evil.

Oscar sounded scared.
That made resisting him harder.
