Chapter 6 - THE DEED

Medina checked county records first thing the next morning.
No new deed recorded.
My name remained sole owner.
I cried when she told me.
Not joy.
Release.
“That means I can go home.”
“Eventually.”
“Why eventually?”
“Because going there while Oscar is occupying the unit and threatening custody creates risk.”
“It’s my house.”
“Condo.”
“Medina.”
“Lucy.”
I hated her.
“We ask the court for temporary possession and access relief.”
“How long?”
“As quickly as the process permits.”
“What about Grace’s crib?”
“Ray can buy a bassinet.”
“It’s not the same.”
“No.”
Nothing was the same.
For three nights, I slept in Ray’s guest room.
Grace woke every two hours.
My milk came in.
My body hurt.
I wore Ray’s late wife’s robe because my clothes remained in the condo.
Postpartum recovery became inseparable from legal triage.
That was one of Oscar’s cruelest achievements.

I could not bleed without thinking about evidence.
Could not nurse without checking my phone.
