Chapter 14 - GRACE’S FIRST HEARING

Grace was twelve days old when we appeared in family court.
Not literally Grace speaking, obviously.
She slept in a carrier beside me.
Oscar sat across the room.
He looked exhausted.
I wanted to ask whether he was eating.
Marriage does not shut off like electricity.
His attorney argued:
Both parents had rights.
Correct.
Lucy should not unilaterally exclude Oscar.
Also correct generally.
But threats mattered.
The judge reviewed texts.
Hospital circumstances.
Temporary housing.
No evidence I endangered Grace.
No evidence of postpartum incapacity.
Temporary primary physical care remained with me.
Oscar received structured contact under agreed supervision pending further review—not because he was proven unfit forever, but because coercive threats and the property conflict raised immediate concerns.
He looked at me afterward.
Not angry.
Destroyed.
I almost went to him.
Ray stepped beside me.
Not blocking.
May you like
Reminding.
I left.
